At Longcross, Health and Safety is paramount. It is our duty to protect everyone who is involved in or affected by our operations and we take this responsibility very seriously. In the last five years we have had only 12 reportable accidents and our current accident incident rate (up to 28 April 2010) stands at 771.74, well below the Health and Safety Executive figure of 1550. However, our target remains zero and we have the following strategies in place to help us achieve this:
Effective reviews, audits and reporting
Our Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) department is staffed by qualified health and safety professionals. We hold annual reviews of our SHE policies and procedures, and ensure that our offices and sites report all accidents and maintain compliance with statutory provisions. Regular training, inspections and audits are conducted fortnightly by our in-house SHE auditors and monthly by the director responsible for SHE.
Our project and office managers are responsible for the immediate correction of any issues arising which are then logged to form part of our internal key performance indicators. All Longcross SHE documentation is controlled by the administrative team at our Ashtead head office.
Comprehensive staff management and training
We recruit skilled professionals whom we induct thoroughly into site and office health and safety procedures encouraging all staff to contribute to a working environment free of accidents and ill health. For staff that work on site, we issue safety passports to make them aware of the minimum standards to which they must conform. We run regular training audits and refresher courses for staff and promote awareness of health and safety good practice through the distribution of regular advice bulletins and safety alerts.
Stringent supplier and site management
We conduct regular contractor and sub-contractor assessment and review, and only use approved suppliers to provide and maintain safe plant and work equipment. Our robust programme of risk assessments ensures that we implement safe systems of work on site.
