I head up the Longcross SH&E department and am responsible for overseeing and managing all safety, health and environmental (SH&E) aspects of the business. I report to the Group Operations director and assist the company directors and senior managers with any SHE issues.
I originally trained as a combat engineer with the Royal Engineers. This is effectively the construction arm of the British forces and during my 22 years’ service I gained a comprehensive knowledge of the various construction trades and their associated health and safety procedures. It was in the army that I acquired the communications skills and problem solving abilities that my job with Longcross demands - during my engagement I was trained as a soldier, a welder, a construction engineer, a fast boat operator, an instructor, a leader, a manager, a bridge builder, a demolitions officer, a mines clearance officer, a training analyst and a site safety manager to mention but a few!
I attend client meetings when required and make both programmed site visits with the directors and clients, and also unscheduled visits to make sure that all is working as it should be. It is critical that I continually communicate up-to-date information to people to ensure the correct procedures run smoothly within the company.
I really enjoy leading the team and working with a great set of colleagues. I like the sheer variety of the work – no two days are ever the same. Longcross offers the facility for continual personal development with the training that is provided throughout the company and I have completed my Environmental Diploma, first aid at work, and several in-house courses such as asbestos awareness, behavioral awareness and temporary structure awareness. It is my goal to consolidate the already strong SH&E department making sure that it is appropriately resourced to manage all the challenges that Longcross will face as it grows in stature.
One of the more rewarding parts of my job is being involved with the community environmental awareness training we provide to primary schools located near some our projects. The children get to participate in some entertaining but educational role playing with “Mother Nature” and “Mr. Toxic” and they thoroughly enjoy it.
In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit, running and walking the dog and spending quality time with my family.
